Bempton Cliffs - In flight

After about 3 hours heading east on the M62 then following A roads you finally arrive at Bempton Cliffs, for anyone who hasn't been there then it is definitely recommended, but best to go before the end of May if you want to see Puffins.

The first post of my Bempton Cliff visit is of birds in flight, sea birds are true masters of the wind, I could barely hold my camera still and they where just gliding past like there was no wind at all.

The first 3 shots are Kittiwakes, the following 4 are Gannets and the final shot is a Puffin, I only wish this had come out better, but they are so fast, hope you like the shots.

All shots taken 24/05/2008 @ Bempton Cliffs RSPB Site.

Puffins, Razorbills & Guillemots to follow....

  1. The detailing and colour of the Kittiwakes and Gannets is beautiful. The Puffin makes me smile; for its posture and expression seem to suggest that its a first flight and its not sure if it will make it or not!?

Great pictures! Congratulations on photographing a Puffin!

  2. I think these shots are fantastic. The shot of the kittiwake from above is magical. One rarely gets to see one from above. I think gannets are so interesting. So large to be aloft. Puffins seem to be the clowns of the sea. They look like little footballs flying.

  3. Wow...those are great! I love the 2nd and 3rd ones in particular, but they are all fantastic! The Puffin looks like a "claymation" figure or something from an animated movie! So unreal and funny looking with his feet sticking out and that mask-like face! I've seen pictures of them, but never in flight! How great that you were there for them!

The Puffin in the cutest things I've ever seen.
    What to go Mike!!

  5. Never before saw a picture of a puffin in flight. Comical and very cute. Poor little thing. I wonder if it has an inferiority complex, watching the others, so graceful and beautiful.
