Tufted at Yarrow

Took a trip to Yarrow Country Park this morning in the hope to catch the Kingfisher or a Dipper which I have seen both there before, you can see my previous Kingfisher shots HERE

Sadly I didn't see either, but I did get watching a pair of Tufted ducks out on the lake, I've always thought of these ducks as being black and white, but with the sun shining quite bright you can see they actually have this nice purple tint to their feathers, here are the shot I got.

You can click the images to enlarge.

Below is the female, quite dull compared to the male.

And this Black Headed Gull kept swooping by after our bread.
All photos taken 06/04/2008.

  2. Lovely duck...the yellow eye really grabs you! I like the female's soft chocolate brown color (maybe its a thing with women and chocolate :-)

  4. OOOoooooo that drake Tufted Duck is so handsome. Unfortunately I have only seen the female. It was a great disappointment as you can imagine. One of these days I will see the drake.

Black headed gull would be a lifer for me. Nice shot.

  5. Beautiful pictures, Mike. I like the windblown feathers on the back of its head in the second picture and the pose in the third one. What beautiful golden eyes. Good capture of the gull, too!

  6. Mike, your shots of water always amaze me. You just seem to totally stop it and make it so inviting. Love the gull, it's beautiful with the black head.
    Very nice, as always!!

  7. Thanks KJPWeb.

Cheers Travis, they do look quiet funny straight on.

Thanks Mary, the females are lovely but didn't come close enough for me to do it justice.

    Cheers Steve.

Thanks Lisa & Lin, the males are my favourites and I was surprised by their colouring.

Thanks Aunt B, I do like shooting ducks, in the photographic sense that is.

  8. Beautiful photos of the Tufted Duck! They are not that common in my area but there is one that has been recently sighted a fair distance away. If I am lucky I might get to see it in a couple of days or so.
