Marshside - Avocet

As you will know the weather's been pretty dull and cold lately and today was no different.

I decided to get out and go to Marshide in Southport, its a great place for waders and passing migrants.

Avocets where the main focal attraction today as they where the only birds close to the centres hide, although there where plenty of other birds out of range, Black tailed godwits, readshanks and the usual geese Canada & Greylag. Swallows where also darting around (lord only knows what they are eating in this cold weather)

Here's a few shots from this afternoon.

Every time a gull flew over the Avocets went mad, chasing after them and giving out warning calls, and on the 2nd photo below I think you will see why.

I could make out 3 eggs, but they are so well camouflaged.

And this Ruddy Duck looked quite settled in the cold winds.

All photos taken 19/04/2008.

  1. Your avocet is so beautiful. You were very lucky to see those eggs. I had to look for a minute to see them in your picture. WOW great find.

  3. Gorgeous pictures, Mike! The avocets are beautiful little birds, and you captured them in such good poses. Nice that you got to see eggs, too.

  4. Very lovely! I have only seen an Avocet once and that was in Western Canada. Great pictures showing the eggs and if they weren't mentioned I wouldn't have seen them. Great action shots.
